Anxiety is no fun

Anxiety is a actually normal human experience; it’s there to protect us and keep us safe from threats and risks. However, sometimes it can grip us so much that it gets in the way of living the kind of life you want to live. It’s an unpleasant feeling, and it’s only natural to do anything to make that feeling go away, even when those things may actually make anxiety worse in the long run or get in the way of doing the things that are important to you. I can help you learn to manage your anxiety more effectively, including performance anxiety, test anxiety, and social anxiety.

How do I typically approach anxiety work?

In my experience, the more we resist, fight, and struggle against anxiety, the worse things usually get. You may be able to do things to help make it go away in the short-term, but this often comes at a cost. For example, you may turn away from things that are really important or enjoyable in the name of avoiding anxiety. Instead, I want to help you change the way you relate to your anxiety.

Rather than focus on eliminating anxiety from your life entirely (which is pretty unlikely), I want to help you turn inwards and loosen the grips that anxiety has on your life, so that you can be more balanced and live life effectively even when anxiety comes around. And, what I often find is that the more we come to open up to and accept the experience of anxiety, the less anxiety we feel overall, and the less negative impact anxiety has on our lives.

I do this with a variety of techniques tailored to each individual, with the focus on helping you not only to understand your anxiety, but also to feel and experience your anxiety in a new way. I have found mindfulness practice to be enormously helpful with anxiety, and we may discuss incorporating mindfulness into our work together.
